The Domes of Casa Grande
While visiting Lil in Arizona, we came upon a strange scene in the desert: the Domes of Casa Grande. Apparently, in 1982 these caterpillar-like structures were built to house a semiconductor plant in the desert. They were quite inexpensive to construct, made by inflating balloons and covering them with urethane and concrete, and thanks to their roughly spherical shape contained a maximum of volume for a minimum of building materials. Despite the expense of developing the site, no circuit boards were ever made here and the domes have been sitting in the desert and falling apart ever since. We thought this would be a fun opportunity to light paint and get some neat pictures and stopped, and only later learned that the land was privately owned and that trespassing is frowned upon--in our defense, someone really should have put up a sign.
